About Dr Sim Chaw Shian
Dr. Sim was brought up in a small town called Gurun in Kedah. He completed primary education in Gurun and went on to complete the secondary education at Penang Chung Hwa Confucian High School in 1985. He then went abroad to study in Sydney, Australia in 1987 and completed the High School Certificate examination, before starting his medical career by joining the medical school at The University of New South Wales in 1988.


Dr. Sim completed his medical education at The University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in the year 1994, and served as a medical intern for one year in Australia. When he finally came back to Malaysia, Dr. Sim started working as a medical officer at Seberang Jaya Hospital, Butterworth, where he gained the interest in Orthopaedic surgery. He eventually joined the master programme in Orthopaedic Surgery at Hospital UKM in 1998. After completed the master programme training in 2002, he worked as Orthopaedic surgeon in Sarawak General Hospital (in Hand and Microsurgery unit), and Seremban General Hospital (Spine unit). In Seremban Hospital, he was fully involved in spine subspeciality work and managing patients with various spinal conditions. Dr. Sim later took up the opportunity to join the AO-SPINE ASIA PACIFIC SHORT-TERM SPINE FELLOWSHIP in Brisbane, Australia in 2004. From then he further his spinal surgery training by joining the fellowship training in spine surgery under the supervision of Professor. Wong Hee Kit, at the National University Hospital(NUH), Singapore in 2007. During his training at NUH, Dr. Sim also participated in the stem cell study in spinal instrumentation and fusion. He worked briefly in the Spine unit at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital after completed the fellowship training and eventually joined the private practice at Tanjung Medical Centre, Penang in 2008. At Tanjung Medical Centre, with his gentle yet meticulous clinical approach and good surgical outcomes, Dr. Sim quickly gained good popularity among patients not only in Penang, but as well as patients from Kedah, Perlis and as far as our neighbor country Indonesia, especially those from Medan, Surabaya, Jakarta and Acheh.

Working initially as General Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon, Dr. Sim is more than capable of treating patient with various musculo-skeletal and trauma conditions, including osteosynthesis for various fractures, joint dislocations, hand and finger injuries, tendon repair and joint replacement surgery. However, his main interest is treating patients with various spinal conditions. And he frequently performs surgeries for patients with the conditions as followed:
